← Back to A day in the life

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to help people. Eventually, I realized that there are numerous opportunities to help people through medicine. Science and anatomy have always been a passion of mine and something I never get tired of. When I saw the option of joining the health science and medicine course I jumped at the opportunity. I thought this would be a great chance to see if this was really what I wanted to do before I continue on my career path.

The health science and medicine course gives me an opportunity to go on job shadows in the professions I am interested in. I also have a chance to explore professions that I have never heard of before. I had an amazing experience when I got the chance to shadow Dr. Haas at DMU Clinic in the OMM department. I got to learn about that career while also watching them adjust patients right in front of me. We also have residencies that we get to pick and go to every week. In my case, I get to go to Broadlawns Hospital every Tuesday. While I am there I receive information about why the patients are there, and then I have time to research more on different topics. After conducting research, I have some time then to visit with patients to help them better understand their medical issues. There are many more unique opportunities we get by being APEX associates such as: visiting DMU, visiting Drake University, visiting Mercy College, going on OT Tours, participating in Podiatrist Presentations, EMS Presentations, SIM Labs, Surgery Labs, Cadaver Labs, and so much more.

I am so grateful to have been given the chance to discover careers I never knew were out there.  This experience has also given me the chance to decide if this is what I really want to do before going to college and spending money on something that I might change my mind on. APEX is by far one of the best choices I have made in my education, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
