APEX Course Planning

Waukee APEX allows juniors and seniors to explore professions of interest through a problem-based, inquiry-learning method. There are no course requirements to participate in the program; however, if you have identified a career path to explore, courses are available to help prepare you for the APEX experience.

Finance & Insurance

Foundations of Insurance and Actuarial Science

  • 9th Grade: Algebra I or II, Business Applications, or Introduction to Business
  • 10th Grade: Probability and Statistics, Introduction to Data Science, Business Applications, or any business elective
  • Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra II with C- or better

Finance, Banking, and Investments

  • 9th Grade: Algebra I or II, Business Applications, or Introduction to Business
  • 10th Grade: Probability and Statistics, Introduction to Data Science, Intro to Accounting, Business  Applications, or any other business elective
  • Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra II with C- or better


Business, Communication & Technology

Designing Communication Solutions

  • 9th Grade: Business Applications, Introduction to Business, Basic Art I and II
  • 10th/11th Grade: Graphic Design, Digital Photography, Multimedia Applications, Business Applications, or Marketing

Developing Web-Based Technologies

  • 9th Grade: Algebra I or II, Business Applications or Introduction to Business
  • 10th/11th Grade: Programming Python, Programming Java, AP Computer Science (Principles or A), Web Design I or Web Design II

Business Startup

  • 9th Grade: Algebra I or II, Business Applications or Introduction to Business
  • 10th/11th Grade: Entrepreneurship, Business Law, Intro to Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Business Applications, or any course in the business department


Engineering

Architecture & Engineering

  • 9th Grade: Introduction to Engineering Design
  • 10th Grade: Architectural Drawing or Principles of Engineering

Engineering Technology and Robotics

  • 9th Grade: Introduction to Engineering Design
  • 10th Grade: Principles of Engineering, Introduction to Metalworking or Advanced Metalworking

Next Generation Energy

  • 9th Grade: Introduction to Engineering Design
  • 10th Grade: Energy, Power, & Transportation, Geology, Principles of Engineering, or Environmental Ecology

Automotive

  • 9th Grade: Introduction to Engineering Design
  • 10th Grade: Energy, Power, & Transportation, Principles of Engineering, any other Tech Ed class

Construction Leadership

  • 9th Grade: Introduction to Drafting & Design or Introduction to Woodworking
  • 10th/11th Grade: Architectural Drawing, Introduction to Construction, Intro & Advanced Metalworking or Intro Advanced Woodworking


Human Services

Exploration of Health Sciences and Medicine

  • 9th Grade: Health I, Physical Science, or Biology
  • 10th Grade: Health II, Biology and/or Chemistry, Statistics
  • 11th Grade: Anatomy

Exploration in Exercise and Sport Science

  • 9th Grade: Health I, Physical Science, or Biology

Medical and Bioscience Research

  • 9th Grade: Health I, Physical Science, or Biology

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • 9th Grade: Health I, Physical Science, or Biology
  • 10th Grade: Health II, Biology and/or Chemistry, Statistics
  • 11th Grade: Anatomy
  • EMT Prerequisite: Completion of Chemistry with a C or better highly recommended
